Selene Finlayson

Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner

For most of her life Selene grew up around the hearing industry. Her father, Marke Hambley, started his first hearing clinic in Victoria in the early 1970’s, when she was a young child. Through the years growing up, she observed her father assist many people improve their quality of life through better hearing. He started to expand his business throughout Vancouver Island; hence “Island Hearing Services” began.

As a teenager she would work part time in the summer at his clinics helping with filing and some administration assistance. After being a stay-at-home mom, she decided to work full time at Island Hearing Services Sidney clinic as a Customer Service Representative at the front desk. She quickly realized her passion for the hearing industry, and desired to understand more about hearing loss and better hearing. When the timing was right, she accepted the first new Audiometric Technician role in the company, assisting the Audiologists and Hearing Instrument Practitioners with instruction to clients on how to use their hearing aids, as well as performing hearing screenings, earmold impressions for noise plugs and swim plugs, and developing community services. She became certified as an Audiologist’s Assistant through Nova Southeastern University, and completed the course from the International Institute for Hearing Instruments and Studies for Professionals in Hearing Health Sciences. The Audiometric Technician position became a key clinic support role within the company. As the program grew, a training facility was developed and Selene took on her next role as the Audiometric Technician Trainer/Coordinator. After the initial training, she would travel to clinics throughout the country to continue training, coaching and supporting the Aud Techs. Selene enjoyed the time spent with her co-workers helping them develop their skills, which in turn allowed her to develop her own skills. She continued on in this role for approximately 3 years. She then accepted her next role as the Regional Office Manager throughout part of Vancouver Island, helping train, improve and retain the highest standard of customer service within the Island Hearing Services clinics. Selene was always eager to complete her certification as a Hearing Instrument Practitioner and get back to clinical work – one on one with clients. She obtained her license as a Hearing Instrument Practitioner in 2009, after the 2 years as Regional Office Manager, and much encouragement for years from her father. So following many years of education and training she became a Registered Hearing Instrument Practitioner and worked in the Royal Oak Branch in Victoria. Selene is now on her next adventure starting a new retail hearing aid dispensing business with her father to continue their mission and vision, and the adventure goes on! A Message From Selene: I am married 27 years and am proud to say I have 2 children who have completed their Bachelor’s Degree at UVic and both very hard workers. My husband and I spend every weekend in the summer at our vacation site on Great Central Lake on Vancouver Island. My passion is boating, hiking, cycling, swimming and spending time with my family whenever possible. I often in the summer will be on the lake driving our boat while pulling my husband through our waterski course, riding his airchair or barefoot waterskiing…YES…I do have a daredevil for a husband! Life is never boring at our place. Our motto is “Never slow down, Never grow old!” (Although, I do like my quiet times when needed for sanity sake). My future plans are to one day take a few months and travel various parts of the world to learn about different cultures and history. As well, I strongly believe in helping others and would like to plan a trip to a 3rd world country to volunteer my time and educate people on hearing health & hearing loss and donate my time to fit hearing aids on less fortunate people.

Robbyn Brodie

Registered Audiologist, Tinnitus Retraining Therapist

I grew up in the Vancouver area, did my undergrad degree at UBC and then headed to Halifax for my Master’s degree in Audiology. My husband began work for the federal government, so we moved to Ottawa where we stayed for 5 years, and there I worked at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

I loved working with children, testing the hearing of kids of all ages, fitting hearing aids, working closely with schools and teachers for the deaf and hard of hearing. From Ottawa we finally moved back out west (I liked the city but couldn’t stand the winters!) to Victoria. I worked in another hearing clinic for five years before joining the NexGen team. I live near the clinic and there is no greater place to live and work! When I’m not working, I am busy trying to keep my two young kids and husband in line. I enjoy hiking at any one of our many beautiful parks or beaches, playing with my kids, and the rare occasion where I can relax and read a book. I became interested in hearing as many of my family members have significant hearing loss, and saw those who did not address the loss became isolated and unable to participate in family gatherings and conversation. As for tinnitus counselling, I decided to further my education in this area after seeing many depressed tinnitus clients who felt like there was nothing that could be done to help them. In fact, there is much that can be done to help, though these patients are often told otherwise. It is very gratifying to be able to help improve tinnitus sufferers’ quality of life.
