Types of Hearing Loss
There are several types of hearing loss that include sensorineural, conductive and sometimes a mixture of these types. A hearing test at Victoria Gordon Head Hearing Clinic can spot the nature and degree of your hearing loss. A hearing loss between 16-25 dB is considered to be negligible and amounts to gently plugging each ear with your fingers. The next level is a mild hearing loss (26-40dB) which can result in not hearing completions of words or not hearing brief words. It might be challenging to differentiate background noise from speech with this type, and listening devices are typically recommended for this level of hearing loss. Moderate hearing loss (41-55 dB) can make conversations on the phone difficult and also cause as much as a 50% reduction in the understanding of speech beyond a 5-foot radius. This level of hearing loss can lead to sensations of seclusion and disconnection. If symptoms are more severe than these, you might have severe and even profound hearing loss. This can lead to major quality of life issues. Some individuals can suffer from high-frequency hearing loss (1500Hz-8000Hz). With high-frequency loss, speech and most other sounds will be viewed as loud enough, but speech will be unclear. Background noise will make the issue worse. The more recent style of listening devices, consisting of open fit and receiver-in-the-canal, are most helpful for this type of hearing loss. These models enable the lower frequency sounds to enter the ear canal normally while processing higher frequency sounds in order to improve speech clarity.
